Onam is Kerala's biggest festival — a ten-day harvest celebration welcoming the legendary King Mahabali home. While Onam is celebrated in every Malayali household rather than as a temple utsavam, Guruvayur during Onam week is unforgettable: the temple town glows with pookalams (floral carpets), festive markets line East and West Nada, and Thiruvonam day brings special poojas and one of the most festive darshan atmospheres of the year.
For 2026, the festival begins with Atham on Sunday, 16 August and peaks on Thiruvonam, Wednesday, 26 August 2026. Uthradam (First Onam) falls on Tuesday, 25 August — the great cooking-and-shopping day known as Uthradapachil.
The temple's famous free prasadam feast (annadanam) at Annalakshmi Hall takes festive form on Thiruvonam as a traditional Onasadya — rice, parippu, sambar, aviyal, thoran, olan, pachadi, payasam and more, served on banana leaf. Hotels around the temple also serve elaborate Onasadya spreads on Uthradam and Thiruvonam.
And 2026 gives pilgrims a rare double: Ashtami Rohini — Sri Krishna Jayanthi — falls on Friday, 4 September 2026, just nine days after Thiruvonam. For the Lord Krishna temple of Guruvayur, this is the grandest day of the Chingam month, so a single 10–12 day trip can cover both Onam and Krishna's birthday.
